QORICANCHA (TEMPLE OF THE SUN) – SACSAYHUAMAN – Q'ENQO – PUCA PUCARA & TAMBOMACHAY.

QORICANCHA– THE MOST SACRED PLACE OF DE INCAS

The Convent of Santo Domingo was built atop the spectacular Inca temple known as Qoricancha, meaning “Golden Courtyard.” This was the most important temple of the Inca Empire, dedicated to the worship of the Sun. During its peak, the walls of Qoricancha were covered in solid sheets of gold, reflecting the deep reverence the Incas had for their deities.

Although the Spanish later looted the temple and built a convent over it, visitors can still admire the extraordinary Inca stonework that has withstood centuries of time. Qoricancha also served as an astronomical observatory, where Inca priests studied the cosmos and tracked key celestial events.

Today, this site offers a fascinating blend of Inca heritage and colonial history, making it one of Cusco’s most iconic landmarks.

SAQSAYHUAMAN – THE MAJESTIC INCA FORTRESS WITH PANORAMIC VIEWS OF CUSCO

Saqsayhuaman, meaning “satisfied falcon” in Quechua, is one of the most impressive masterpieces of Inca architecture. Although some chronicles describe it as a ceremonial temple, many researchers suggest it also served as a strategic fortress due to its monumental design.

Even after centuries of destruction, Saqsayhuaman continues to amaze visitors with its majesty, grandeur, and splendor. The massive stone walls—built with blocks weighing up to 128 tons—showcase the extraordinary engineering skills of the Incas.

The city of Cusco was designed in the shape of a puma, with Saqsayhuaman forming its head. Today, this sacred site remains a vibrant cultural stage, hosting the Inti Raymi Festival every June 24th, where thousands gather to celebrate the winter solstice in a spectacular reenactment of Inca traditions.

Q’ENQO – INCA LABYRINTH AND RITUAL CENTER.

The word Q’enqo (also written Kenko) translates as “Labyrinth”, referring to the tunnels, passages, and underground channels carved into this remarkable site. During Inca times it was originally known as Q’inqu, but the name evolved under Spanish influence to what we use today.

Entirely sculpted into a natural rock formation, Q’enqo was a sacred ceremonial center of great religious significance. Despite the attempts of the Spanish to destroy it, its solid stone structure allowed much of it to survive.

Within its passages, visitors can admire carvings that embody the Andean worldview, including representations of three sacred animals: the condor, the puma, and the snake—symbols of the sky, the earth, and the underworld.

Q’enqo remains a place of mystery and reverence, inviting travelers to connect with the spiritual essence of the Inca civilization.

PUKAPUKARA – THE RED FORTRESS

Pukapukara means “The Red Fortress” in Quechua. This archaeological site, though modest in size, played an important role in Inca times. While its name suggests a fortress, it is believed to have served both defensive and administrative purposes. Pukapukara was also a strategic resting point for the chaskis, the swift messengers of the Inca Empire, who carried vital messages and goods across vast distances. Its reddish stone walls, especially striking at sunset, continue to evoke the grandeur of the Inca civilization.

TAMBOMACHAY – THE TEMPLE OF WATER.

In Quechua, Tambomachay means “resting place”. This impressive site is believed to have been a water temple, where the Incas worshiped one of their most sacred elements. Its finely carved aqueducts, canals, and stone fountains channel the crystal-clear waters of a nearby spring, creating a tranquil setting that reflects the harmony between nature and Inca engineering.
