SALKANTAY TREKKING TO MACHUPICCHU

The 4-day Salkantay trek is one of the most popular treks to Machu Picchu, considered one of the best trekking in Peru. During this great 4 days and 3 nights trek also we get to a higher altitude, we will cross high Andean mountains, snow-capped Humantay and Salkantay, impressive lagoons and lush cloud forests to reach the world wonder of Machu Picchu. Enjoy this exciting experience with comfortable tents, a tour of coffee plantations, and coming back to Cusco by a fascinating train.

SALKANTAY TREK TO MACHUPICCHU TRIP DETAILS

DAY 1: CUSCO - SORAYPAMPA - HUMANTAY LAGOON - SOYROCOCCHA.

This adventure to the Andean mountains starts at 4:30am, Machupicchu Condor Trek staff picks you up from your hotel, and we will transport in a private bus for 3 hours approximately to the beginning of the trek in Soraypampa. During the journey through the roads of the Andes, we have views of interesting towns such as Iscuchaca and Limatambo, the surrounding valleys and the famous snow-capped Salkantay. We will have a breakfast in Mollepata town (not included), at the start of our hike in Soraypampa, we will enjoy a cup of coca tea while enjoying the spectacular views of the glaciers of Humantay (5,900m/ 19,356ft) and Salkantay (6,217m/ 20,396ft). Later, we begin our round-trip hike of approximately 2.5 hours to visit the Humantay Lagoon, and enjoy the beautiful crystal-clear waters of the lagoon. Let yourself be enchanted by the beauty of such an amazing creation of nature, return to the starting point to continue the hike to Salkantay Pampa, here we enjoy a delicious lunch. After a short siesta we head to our first camp Soyroccocha (4,400 m / 14,517 ft), located at the foot of the imposing Salkantay mountain. At camp, we will have afternoon tea to warm up, finally our dinner and resting.

DAY 2: SOYROCOCHA - SALKANTAY PASS - HUAYRACMACHAY - CHAULLAY - LUCMABAMBA.

Machupicchu Condor Trek staff will wake you up with a hot cup of tea to enjoy in the tent before getting up. After a delicious breakfast we continue hiking uphill for an hour, arriving at the Salkantay Pass (4,650m / 15,367ft), we feel truly astonished by the spectacular views of imposing snow-capped peak: Salkantay and spectacular jungle valley. This peak is considered sacred by the Andean people and the tour Guide explain you about the importance of this snow mountain (apu: Andean God) part of the traditional Andean beliefs. Time to take the best pictures and then start walking a downhill for 2 hours to Huayracmachay where a hot lunch will be waiting for us. Then we start descending for 3 hours to the rural community of Chaullay. Along the way, you will be enchanted by the refreshing green valleys and spectacular views. We will feel the change of the weather from the dry Andean valley to the warm and humid Amazon.

Getting to Chaullay we will take a local transportation to Lucmabamba, where we will spend the second night (2,050 m/6,767 ft). Here we will have a relaxing tour and appreciate the source of coffee exports, forging a connection with the real world of Peruvian coffee. We begin by exploring the fields, learning about the different types of coffee and selecting our own, finally, we will be able to prepare and drink our own coffee is a truly exceptional experience. In addition, we will explore into the plantations (banana, orange and avocado) with different ecosystems where we will have dinner and camp.

Hiking time                 : 6 to 7 hours approximately.

DAY 3: LUCMABAMBA - LLACTAPATA - HYDROELECTRIC POWER PLANT - AGUAS CALIENTES

Our goal today is Machupicchu town (Aguas Calientes), for which we will be treated to the last delicious breakfast prepared by our cook. From here, we will hike uphill on the ancient Inca trail for 3 hours to the Puncuyoc pass (2,700m/8,858ft). Along the way, be amazed by the incredible views of deep valleys that show off their fruit plantations in the distance. Finally, we arrive at the Inca constructions of Llactapata; located just across the valley from Machu Picchu. There, we take time and snacks to recover our energies and enjoy the strategic location of Machu Picchu lnca site and its surrounding mountains, Huayna Picchu, Machu Picchu and Aobamba Canyon. From here, we descend for 2 hours to the hydroelectric plant, Cusco’s main source of energy. Nearby, we will have lunch before taking the train to Aguas Calientes, where we will have dinner and spend the night at our hotel.

Hiking time                 : 6 to 7 hours approximately.

DAY 4: AGUAS CALIENTES - MACHU PICCHU - CUSCO

Definitely this day you will enjoy Machupicchu with our tour Guide, from the hotel we go to Aguas Calientes bus station to board the bus that will take us to the Inca site of Machupicchu. Upon arrival, you will appreciate the sunrise over this great Inca city. Then we begin our guided tour inside Machupicchu for approximately 2 hours, our tour Guide will give you a detailed explanation, as well as visit the most important places within the place, at this time you can also take advantage of taking pictures.

You will also have time to enjoy some activities, if you wish (not included in the price), these free activities are:

  • Climb Huayna Picchu Mountain or Machu Picchu Mountain and enjoy the beauty and the magnificent Llaqta of Machu Picchu from the top (request reservation together with the Inca Trail reservation and has an additional cost).
  • Other optional activities in Aguas Calientes include a visit to the local museum or a visit to the thermal baths.

After the tour in Machu Picchu, we will go down by bus (included) to the town of Machu Picchu, also called Aguas Calientes, where you will have time for lunch (not included).

In the afternoon we will return by Expedition or Voyager train, which will take us to Ollantaytambo station. Here our private transportation will be waiting to take you to your hotel in Cusco.

WHAT TO TAKE WITH YOU

The Salkantay Trek and Machupicchu 4 Days 3 Nights is a challenging high-altitude adventure, requiring thorough preparation. To ensure a smooth and comfortable trek, especially since it begins early in the morning, make sure to pack the following essential items:

  • Original passport (it has to be the same you have used for booking your trek)
  • Valid student ID card (if you booked as a student)
  • Good daypack (the smaller, the better)
  • Water storage:  2-3L (Please bring reusable bottles, not disposable ones).
  • Comfortable hiking boots with ankle support
  • Sleeping bag (can be rented from Machupicchu Condor Trek)
  • Headlamp: essential
  • Toilet paper

WHAT TO PUT IN THE DUFFEL BAG (The horse will carry it)

As a Direct Local Tour operator we provide you with a duffel bag at your briefing and INCLUDE an extra porter who will carry up to 7 kgs or 14 pounds including your sleeping bag, mattress and extra clothing. By Peruvian law, a duffel bag must not weigh more than 7 kilograms (15lbs). This limit is set to protect the health of the porters or horses. All bags will be weighed before being accepted. If you require more than 7 kilograms, it will then be your responsibility to carry the extra weight with your day pack.

  • Warm clothes, down jacket — 2nd campsite temp around 3º C.

  • Quickdry towel. We provide small ones, you might prefer something larger.
  • Small bottle of soap: we provide warm water each day to wash.
  • Battery Charger: No electricity along the trek.
  • Large plastic bags will be provided at the office — Please ask for them.
  • Sleeping bag: It has to be at least -15ºC – This can be rented from us for $25 USD.

The Saltantay Trek to Machu Picchu can be done at any time of the year, as long as we have a minimum of 2 traveling tourists!
